What Are Butt Implants?

Buttock implant surgery involves the insertion of silicone implants into the buttocks in order to enhance their size and shape. Butt implants are soft, solid silicone that come in different sizes depending on the patients' preference and on their general body build.

How Common Is Buttock Implant Surgery?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 853 people opted for gluteal or butt implant surgery in 2008. Of these, 87 percent were women who either wanted to emulate Jennifer Lopez or Beyonce, or were merely seeking to reverse the effects of aging in their sagging buttocks.

What Is The First Step To Buttock Implant Surgery?

The first and most important step is to find a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience with the various buttock augmentation procedures. As a national expert in body contouring surgery, Dr. Siamak Agha has extensive experience with various buttock enhancement techniques and has pioneered signature procedures.

Consultation For Your Buttock Implant Surgery

During your initial visit be open about what you are looking for out of your surgery. Discuss your goals and desires, including how large you want your buttocks to be.

Buttock Implant Surgery: What A Girl Wants

Buttock implant surgery, also called buttock augmentation, typically involves a 3-inch incision made between the midline of the buttocks. Dr. Agha then meticulously creates a pocket for the buttock implant and inserts it through this incision. The implant is positioned between the buttock muscle and fat for most patients. However, if you lack buttock fat, Dr. Agha prefers to place the buttock implant within the main buttock muscle. This area will form scar tissue that will keep the implant in place. After placing the buttock implants, Dr. Agha will make sure that both buttocks are symmetrical and look natural before stitching up the incisions. The incision normally heals and becomes barely visible by approximately one year after surgery. These natural-feeling implants help round out the upper and outer parts of the buttocks, but not the lower parts. The implants cannot be placed in the lower part of the buttocks because of the risk of nerve damage. To fill out the lower part, fat injection is usually used.

Buttock Implants Come In Different Shapes And Sizes

Like breast implants, butt implants come in different sizes and shapes, and can even be customized. In general, these silicone implants help round out the upper and outer parts of the buttocks; but not the lower parts.

What Type Of Anesthesia Is Used For Buttock Implant Surgery?

Buttock implant surgery is performed under general anesthesia, typically on an outpatient basis.

How Long Does Buttock Implant Surgery Take?

Buttock implant surgery usually takes about two to three hours to complete. Dr. Agha will often perform liposuction of your lower back at the same time to enhance your results.

Who are the Best Candidates for Butt Implants?

In general, the best candidates for butt implants are those individuals who are healthy but don't have sufficient fats to undergo a Brazilian butt lift. They should be psychologically stable and be realistic in their expectations.

What Are The Typical Risks Of Buttock Implant Surgery?

There are risks involved with any medical procedure, buttock augmentation being no exception. For example, butt implants may shift and cause the buttocks to look asymmetrical. Other risks may include infection, unsatisfactory cosmetic results, excessive bleeding, anesthesia problems and the need for revision surgery.

What To Expect After Buttock Implant Surgery?

Butt implants stretch the tissues, which can be painful, especially if the implants are placed within the muscle. Dr. Agha will prescribe an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication to reduce the risk of infection and help with the pain. Dr. Agha typically uses temporary drains to remove excess fluid buildup during recovery. You will wear a compression garment for support for a few days after your buttock surgery.

Can Buttock Implant Surgery Be Combined With Other Plastic Surgery Procedures?

Sometimes butt implants are paired with buttock lifts and liposuction of the lower back to yield more balanced results. More often, Dr. Agha performs liposuction with fat injections into the lower buttock area to shape and contour the entire buttock area.

Is Buttock Implant Surgery Typically Covered By Insurance?

The buttock augmentation procedure is unlikely to be covered by insurance.
